Update

The shop has had the car for a week, now. No news has to be good news: if it was something big like a cracked block, they would have already figured it out. More likely it will turn out to be an electrical problem, which is harder to track down but (hopefully) not terribly expensive to repair.

Once the car is rolling again, we will find a place to live again, ASAP. Things are still kind of rough until then.
