Kipper 2.

Requirements and installation

Also, how to upgrade.

Requirements

First, a modern browser. Kipper is a browser application that takes advantage of modern CSS and PNG graphics. Do not use IE6 or other outdated software. For best results, use Firefox or Opera.

For the scripting, you must run Kipper from a web server with PHP. You can install Kipper on a remote website, or on your own desktop server. From your desktop, Kipper uploads the output via FTP. Use directly on your website, and you must CHMOD the appropriate folders and files.

There is no MySQL or database of any kind, so there's no hassle. Just copy the folder and go.

If you would like to try a desktop server and don't have one, try one of our recommended third party solutions.

Installation on your desktop

Short version: open the folder and go.

If you have a desktop installation of a web server and PHP, great! Just unzip the Kipper zip file, and copy the Kipper folder somewhere to your personal webserver.

Huzzah! You don't have to mess with permissions. Proceed directly to opening Kipper (kipper/index.php) in your browser.

Kipper security should be left off. It serves no purpose on your desktop. And if the FTP features are not present, make sure the interface is set to "desktop".

The default configuration file points to a dummy folder. Click "make pages". If everything seems to be working, proceed.

To get ready to make pages, go to the top of the sidebar settings, and type a new name for a job file, save it, and then start editing the job details as described in the included help documents.

Installation on the web

Short version: upload the folder and CHMOD some directories.

Unzip the Kipper zip file, and upload the kipper folder to your website, anywhere.

You must CHMOD (set permissions) to the job folder, and the files inside, to 777. Any folder where you know you will want to make pages must be set to 777. Old versions of pages that Kipper will overwrite (that Kipper didn't make in the first place) should be deleted or set to 777.

Wherever you put the folder, open its homepage (kipper/index.php) in your browser. Kipper should be pointing to its default configuration file. If you immediately get errors, it is most likely that you haven't finished resetting the permissions, or you failed to upload the entire folder.

The default configuration file points to a dummy folder. Click "make pages". If everything seems to be working, go to the bottom of the sidebar settings and turn on Kipper security. The default username and password are both "admin". Be sure to think of something more secure.

Caution: our password system is bare minimum security. Use .htaccess for better security.

To get ready to make pages, go to the top of the sidebar settings, and type a new name for a job file, save it, and then start editing the details as described in the included help documents.

You should also set Kipper's interface to "website". This will turn off all of the FTP features, which are superfluous on a remote location.

Upgrading

Since Kipper is a PHP script, web pages, and some graphics, you should be able to upgrade simply by opening the new ZIP file and dragging it to your old Kipper folder, and let it overwrite the old files.

You might want to back up your job files, first; but hopefully you won't need to do more than make minor adjustments to the settings, if at all.

For a cleaner upgrade, copy the new Kipper folder to your server, then copy your job files to the job folder.
