Görsidor

Well, I said I'd have Görsidor done on Monday, and I do.

Actually, I thought I had it completely finished on Saturday. I was ready to do the whole "and on the seventh day he rested" business. But, wouldn't you know it, I found some more bugs to stamp out on Sunday.

Constant battle testing! Görsidor is taking over the job of making single pages on my own website, and using it with a very complex template exposed a few weaknesses. Mostly regex stuff. There's one thing I've got to say about regex: it's a /^[^@]@[^@].[^@]*$/ pain in the [0-9], but it sure gets the job done.

Finally finally, Görsidor: a little script utility for making website pages. Download here.

(Update: moved this to a dedicated download page, since there will likely be the odd update and correction.)

Gör<s>a</s>sidor, at last!

Oops. A few more bugs had to be stamped out. A slight change in the name, too.

Find Görsidor here.

<s>Whew. Had my head so deep in this project, I've just about forgotten how to do anything else. That’s a toilet. How’s that work again?</s>

<s>Görasidor is a browser-based “make pages” program that combines one site template (or your home page) with separate content files to build a basic website.</s>

<s>That is, reg’lar old pages as opposed to blogs or archives.</s>

<s>How easy is this? If you already have a homepage, you can just put a couple of tags around the content, and use it for your template. Any additional pages you want to make, you would just add an include file (like <about.inc>).</s>

<s>Görasidor grabs it and combines it with your site design and makes <about.html>. That’s pretty much it.</s>

<s>You must have a web server and PHP. It’s better if you run this from your desktop (no security or permission hassles), but you can upload it to your website, as well. There’s an optional password login page for so-so online security.</s>

<s>Download [Görasidor] (http://www.bookelves.com/files/gorasidor_v1_20081220.zip) (273k)</s>

Görasidor in progress

A little thing for making pages.

I started releasing this in a different form, but then realized that I hadn't done enough work with it online. There's a big difference between making files on your desktop and on your web server--and my time on the internet is so limited right now, it's easy to forget that.

So the new version is going to be even more user-friendly. Where I had started with a simple script with only a few settings for the user to edit, I've created a simple interface:

This will make up for the extra stuff that has to be set. Users will never have to open the script itself. A button tests the FTP connection settings, and the script helps make sure everything else is formatted correctly.

However, it may be necessary to make this a desktop-only application. The other big concern is security. It might not be a good idea to leave something like this sitting around on your website. Although, perhaps with just a password…

In any case, hope to have this ready Monday morning.

Something useful

Despite my “New Year's Resolution”, I’ve had some trouble getting to the internet this week.

I hope to make up for it, today. I had a brilliant (I hope) idea, yesterday, and put it all together very quickly: a small script that puts together web pages automatically based on one template.

I’m cleaning up the package right now, mostly making sure that the support material is ready (instructions and notes). Should have it posted shortly.

Polyprocessing

A new branch of the site has been launched, called Polyprocessing. This is the successor to my old, defunct PolyEdit page, which has been referenced on the PolyEdit homepage proper for some time (a redirect has been posted).

This is not a new direction or anything. This just means that technical stuff that I already post will go there, instead. For those of you looking for non-technical entertainment, this is a good thing.
